A lot of women – both soon-to-be moms and “pros” – have this great fear of the pain associated with a long labor. While there was a time when doctors do not recommend women to learn techniques on inducing labor themselves, they now advocate these methods in order to make the labor process smoother and easier.
Why should you learn how to induce labor yourself? First of all, DO NOT learn these techniques if your goal is to abort a child. This is the main reason why doctors did not advocate self-induction techniques in the first place. If you are going to induce labor for this purpose, you are putting yourself at risk of severe hemorrhage and infection, which may prove fatal.
If you have had a prior histories of a long and difficult labor, self-induction techniques can help the next pregnancies to be less stressful and traumatic. Women with weak uterine contractions can use a variety of methods so that they can easily “push” the baby out. In cases wherein the woman is discovered to be a candidate for cesarean section, she can learn the techniques that will enable the baby to move in the “head down” position and/or will aid in the thinning of the cervix to promote smoother delivery.
